My husband was taken by ambulance to Richmond General ER with a-fib and ended up staying there 5 days while it was sorted. The care we received from the doctors was first class and the nurses truly are exceptional. Every nurse we had contact with was caring, polite and professional. We also found the maintenance staff to be polite and always busy cleaning. The hospital itself seems cramped for space and definitely needs some updating but that does not reflect on the hospital staff. It was reassuring to be in our local hospital and feel well treated and taken care of. Thank you.

I was in Richmond General Hospital between March 11 and March 16. 2017. The reason for my stay in the hospital was an intestinal obstruction and blockage. During my stay a lot of miscommunication happened between doctors and nurses, one after another. Because such problems could lead to a medical malpractice, I decided that I will never go to RGH again. While in the hospital, I made photos of my “Bedside Binder Documents” to keep them as my medical history. After I left hospital and printed these documents, I discovered that my medical records were mixed up with another patient’s who was in the same room. One of the pages showed a male patient's name, who was 95-years old, and his personal medical information. Some of pages did not show any patient's name (without a patient label) but only records. Some of records were not initialed at all. The mix-up of my medical records with another patient’s records is a serious and alarming matter, because the lives of two people could have been at risk!

IN MY CASE, IF I DID NOT TAKE PICTURES OF THE RECORDS FROM THE BEDSIDE BINDER, AND, IF BECAUSE OF THE RECORDS MIXUP, I GOT A WRONG MEDICATION AND / OR A WRONG TREATMENT AND SUBSEQUENTLY WERE TO DIE, THE OFFICIAL CAUSE OF DEATH WOULD BE THE INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION AND BLOCKAGE, BECAUSE THE REAL TRUTH WOULD NEVER COME OUT!!!

My wife went to emergency for assistance due to unexpected incident during pregnancy on Dec-24 night time. A male Doctor there was rude and unresponsible. He does not understand the integrity and responsibility of a Doctor. Shame on him. Don't know his name. But, I will not go there anymore.

The abovementioned miscommunication between doctors and nurses made me seriously question professional qualifications of some nurses working at RGH. On several occasions doctors told me one thing but the nurses told me totally opposite on the same subject. Quite often nurses responded to my requests by replying that the doctors did not know!! For example 1. When I was not allowed to eat, and there was a notice above my bed stating NPO (non by mouth), still a nurse provided me with the chewing gum and asked me to chew it! 2. When I was required to eat, the nurse came yelling at me not to eat! 3. The doctor in charge gave me a treatment and wrote down a message, but the nurse refused to comply with doctor’s instruction. When I complained to a woman who introduced herself as the manager, Tracy, regarding the nurse who refused to do what the doctor ordered, this manager said that the doctor did not know hospital policy! And, then two nurses repeated the same that doctor did not know hospital policy! If a doctor does not know hospital policies, how do nurses can do proper work? This means to me that quite possibly other patients’ medical records are also being mixed up.

A family member was in care at RGH for over a week and we found all the staff to be very caring and supportive and good to deal with. Nursing staff called me with updates I requested on my relative's surgery which relieved a lot of anxiety. Plus the physio staff work tirelessly and carefully to get people on their feet and moving again. These are good people and the family was very pleased with the level of care. Thanks.

Ridiculous wait times at the emergency room. Been waiting for 8hrs and haven’t seen the doctor yet (still waiting). I was told there’s only one doctor on duty overnight. Obviously they need to look into how to better staff to the need. Not sure what’s the point of being ER otherwise?
